Integrated wastewater discharge for a busy waterfront

Marina and pump-out

Along the waterfront outside Stockholm's Grand Hôtel, ferries depart daily for destinations across the Stockholm archipelago. While passengers enjoy the busy waterfront, much of the infrastructure that keeps ferry operations running remains discreetly integrated into the quay.

For four decades, our people have developed trusted and eco-efficient sanitation solutions used around the world. We believe technology can make a positive difference – and that dedication and competence are key to making it happen.

Although each service station provides multiple utility connections, all wastewater discharge points are linked to a single central Jets® vacuum system that efficiently handles blackwater and greywater from the ferries.

Designed for both the harbour and the city

The ten service stations are built into wooden structures that also function as public seating when not in use. This allows the quay to remain an attractive public space while providing the ferries with access to essential services including fuel, fresh water and wastewater discharge.

One vacuum station serving ten locations

Although the service stations are distributed along the quay, they are all connected to one central Jets®  vacuum pump station.

Three Jets® pumps generate the vacuum required to empty blackwater and greywater from the ferries' holding tanks, allowing all ten stations to operate from a shared installation rather than requiring pumping equipment at each location.

Built for reliable operation

The system has been operating for approximately 17 years with very few operational disruptions. Ports of Stockholm is responsible for maintaining the central pump station together with the pipeline network connecting the service stations.

By combining centralised vacuum technology with thoughtful architectural integration, the installation demonstrates how essential harbour infrastructure can be incorporated into the public environment. Visitors simply see a row of wooden benches along the waterfront, while beneath them, a shared Jets® vacuum system quietly supports the daily operation of Stockholm's archipelago ferries.

One technology, different possibilities

While Stockholm uses one central vacuum station serving multiple discharge points, the same Jets® vacuum technology can also be used in standalone pump-out stations with integrated Jets® Vacuumarator® technology.

- Every harbour is different, but the principle remains the same. Whether it's a single plug-and-play pump-out station or a central system serving multiple discharge points, we use the same proven vacuum technology to provide reliable and efficient wastewater handling, says Göran Larsson, Sales Manager Sweden at JETS.

This flexibility allows ports and marinas to choose a solution that matches their layout and operational needs while benefiting from the same compact, reliable and low-maintenance vacuum technology.
